10th Herding and little agility fun

wow!  We've done 10 herding lessons already!  Did we improved??  Hmm..Koto still run into sheep, barks at them, still challenging dean if she can take over total control out of him and delay to his commands. She is not bad though, but not good. Not really improving as much as other working dogs. I did record on video but it was pretty chaotic herding (no.. chasing!)

We have been trying to understand and studying more sheep herding by internet,  books and videos. I found BC breeder and sheepdog trainer in England called "Astra Sheepdog centre" they provide seminar of "Natural Canine Communication."  Essential skill for the beginner handler as it ensures a quick understanding of the complex and almost invisible communication between the dog and sheep. 

it is easy, stress and pain free way for both dog, handler and sheep to train a sheepdog to understand each other, and learn its craft in a natural stress and panic free way.  

I am absolutely interested in this seminar. well it is too far to attend so I am still researching about this. I really want to Koto to be thinking dog and don't want her to feel anxious and worried about making mistakes. Her confidence and focus is getting stronger than before since we started "complete correction free" life. 

The excesice we will start with Koto this week: using long stick and soccer ball to teach over, away, quick response to command and self control around excitable object! 

ハーディングレッスンは今回で10回目でした。10回やってみて何か目に見えた変化があったのでしょうか？もちろん私生活や私達との関係には変化が見られます。でもパートナーと話し合ってもやはり琴ちゃんの羊を追う体勢や行動はあまり変わっていない様子。まだ全速力で走るし吠えるし冷静に判断できない、お 陰で私達も真剣に本や映像でハーディングの勉強中。イギリスのアストラシープドッグセンターというBCブリーダー、羊犬トレーナーのセミナーでナチュラル ケーナインコミュニケーションというセミナーのを見つけました。羊犬人間の自然な行動学を理解し、お互いに慣れ、ストレスやパニックの無い関係を築く練習 をする様です。興味しんしん！琴は感受性の高い子なのでいかにマイルドなコレクション（ショックカラーもNG）も「間違えたら怒られるぅ」という感じで臆病になります。コレクションフリー(Noやeh ehもNG）の生活に変えてから　めまぐるしく彼 女の自信とやる気がパワーアップした事と、彼女の集中力の強さに毎日驚かされます。琴にはとても良さそうな内容なので、リサーチしてもっと勉強します
 

We did agility practice at Kepala too. 

we did 2x2 pole entry practice, contact practice and just made her to feel agility is fun!  Well.. the end of the day She's got 3 breeding pads. Poor koto, She is totally in a pain and  is in bed all day.  Terrible terrible mum..hope she will learn to not to run too quickly.

ハーディングスクールの向いにアジリティレンタルコートがあります。１時間5ドルなので2x2、コ ンタクトの練習をしてきました。でも！ー琴のパットがぱっくりはがれてました。２週間続けて３本も。今日は全くベットから動きません,珍しく酷い疲れ方。遊びすぎた。。

Pink Galah is one of the most common parrots in Australia 
and it can be found in everywhere in Australia.  
I usually see them at the park, eating grass roots, 
but recently saw troop of them near the beach! 
Their voice is very loud, but super cute!

特徴のある大声で鳴きます。普段は芝生の根っこを公園で
食べて居ますが、海岸で草の根っこを食べている多数の
ガラーを発見！頭が丸くてずんぐりむっくりで可愛い！

9th Herding

先週の琴のハーディングは元に戻りました！まだ羊に向って吠えてはいましたが、しっかりシェパードのディーンの指示に従い（少しタイミングが遅いけど）彼がこの環境の主導権を しっかり握っていました！今回は随分頭を使って羊の動かし方を考えているように見えました：）どんどん　こうやって冷静に物事を判断できる子になってほしいもんです。。そして私達の大きな変化は今回から一切コレクションなし。音でのコレクションはまだ使わないといけない時がありますが、絶対に”ノー”といったり怒ったりは無しです。ハーディングでも出来たら褒める、やって欲しい事を教えるのPositive Reinforcementだけでレッスンしていきます！写真は琴の双子では？と言われているsassyちゃん、琴の隣で羊を覗くのがAbbyちゃん、左の写真がSouthAustraliaのNorm FarmクーリーのRasta。下がBCのsasha!　可愛い子ばかりで私の方がウキウキでした。

Koto was pretty good at last herding, was not show feral(?) behavior at all this time! She was much better and let Dean to control space. She was thinking much more than just rounding up.  The big change for us is we decided to never use correction(strong NO or Yelling) to Koto at Herding lesson.  We will be consist in positive reinforcement, might have to use sound to correct her but never ever say NO! I finally got a picture of beautiful BC Sassy(Agility instructor's dog),Abby next to Koto. They both looks like Koto so much! We met other new beautiful new dog Rasta the Coolie (Norm's Coolie's puppy) on left side picture and below is BC girl Sasha.  many cute & great dogs!

winter dinners

めっきり冬のメルボルン。日も短いしどうしても温かい家でご飯を食べる事が増えます！近くの図書館には最新のレシピ本が沢山あるので、まず３週間程借りて何品か作ってみて　美味しく出来たらその本を購入するようにしています。夕食の為のソースやダシ汁、ストックを週末に作り 朝、魚や野菜を漬けたりマリネにしたりやはり料理は時間をかける、愛情を注ぐ、これだけで本当に美味しさ倍増です♪

写真は緑茶、レモン、ライム、オレンジの皮、レモングラスをオーブンで乾燥させて塩コショウを混ぜた物を白身魚にまぶして漬けたものをフライパンでさっと焼いて、オレンジとフェンネルとパスタのサラダと一緒に頂きました。緑茶をコーティングに使ったのは初めてでしたが！新しい♪魚に緑茶！合います。美味しかったです。②は初めて挑戦したパエリア！意外と簡単で激うまでした〜

We mostly stay in home during Melbourne's long winter nights.  We've been enjoying new recipe books from local library where have the latest range of books.  during this 3 weeks of rent, I cook 3-4 dishes from the book, if we love it, then buy that book.  very economical way to understand cooking and different recipes:) Picuture above are 1) Greentea, citrus and orange zest,lemon grass tea rub, coated on white fish with fennel, orange and pasta salada

今日はNZ Border CollieのNannuちゃんとアニマルサイエンス、行動学を勉強中の飼い主さんに会いました！

出会いは琴が飼い主さんが運転する車を駐車場で追掛けた事。。それを見た飼い主さんが車から降りて来て「ウチの子もこうだったのよ！」後部座席から出て来たのは車を追掛ける琴に反応しまくるボーダーコリー。車から降りた途端、二匹とも酷い顔で歯を剥き出して威嚇、そしてガウガウ〜。犬が苦手、速いものを追掛ける、常に自立で公園ではボールしか興味なし（ワーキングドックの習性）でも人にはとってもフレンドリー！同じ習性を持つボーダーオーナーに会ったのは初めて。関節症でショータイプの体格、性格のNannuちゃん、これも関係してるのだろうけど、飼い主さんはNannuの追掛け癖を１年以上掛けて直したらしく今では一切車や自転車に反応しなくなったそうです！やり方は私と全く同じ。やって欲しくない事が起こった後でその行動を怒るのではなく、やって欲しい事を教える事。車や犬が来たら私を見させ、私の指示に集中ながらこの世の中で「一番興味のある物」になる事。琴はherdingを始めて追掛けはピッタリ止めたのに、Herdingに毎週行ってないのもあるのですが、ここ１ヶ月程又やってます。今は車のいないフェンスのある公園や森でしかOffにはしません、車内もクレート！やはり徹底的に日常生活でこの行動が起りそうな所には連れて行かないようにして、じみちにトレーニングしていくしかないんだよなぁー。嬉しかった事はこの後なんと二匹はテンションの事は全く忘れたようにお互いを気にせず一緒にボールを追掛けて遊べました！珍しく琴には貴重なsocializationが出来たぽかぽか金曜の気持ちの良い午後でしたよ

We met NZ Border Collie Nannu and her owner Tammie who is studying animal science at university. Koto chased the car at the car park today.. then the driver came out and told me that my dog used to do the exactly the same! There was very excitable looking BC in the back seat! Doesn't like dogs, chase, and only interested in Ball fetch at the park.. typical working dog breed character! She fixed this Nannu's behavior reinforcing to focus on her when near the fast moving object, then tried to became the most interesting thing in the world to avoid sudden chasing.  that's exactly what I do with Koto for long time.  She stop chasing for awhile when we start herding but she has started again after many weeks of away from the school.  Well, I just have to trust her and be patient, keep trying to be the most interesting thing in her world:) They both had a great ball chasing together after all tension.  It was great socialization day under the sun for all of us!

I found this picture from Koto's vet web-page. wow,,There are about 12 dogs with him..small,mid, to large various breeds. what a champion or even nerd..! thought what is in his back pack.. hope not all doggy poo bags..

Cold July has started

1st of July! wow, 2010 is in half way.  I am back in School from this month, and Koto is back in backyard during we were out and I am a bit worried about her.  She lost 2 of the best friends (Monkey&Molly)and I would not be home all the time anymore. so I am seriously dreaming of getting another one who can be Koto's best and forever friend.  well.. wait and see. We must make sure if we have enough time for 2 Border Collies!

７月になりました。今年は半分終わったんですね、早い！今月から学校に戻るので琴も裏庭で留守番の日々に戻ります。最近大親友のモリーとマンキーを失った彼女、少し心配なので　２匹目の事を毎日考えているこのごろです。良い出会いがありますように。。

Towel tricks

I'm teaching towel tricks to Koto. (Still working on)

1) Bring the towel

2) Take the corner of towel

3) then Roll over !

I'm dreaming of when she master this trick, she will bring her towel after the bath, then wrap her self into towel!
Its going to be very funny and cute one! But we are struggling with Rolling over with towel.. she gets too excited to roll so towel always fell out from her mouth. You just need to calm down a bit koto.. It is adorable and fun trick!!


少し前の話になりますが、琴ちゃんに教えている（途中の）タオルトリック。

①タオルを持ってくる

②タオルの端っこをくわえる

③くわえたままロールオーバー

そうするとタオルをクルッと身体に巻き付けられます！お風呂の後に出来たら便利だし可愛いだろうなぁと思って教えてますが、くわえたままのロールオーバーがなかなか困難。。というのも琴のロールオーバーがあまりにも激しいのでタオルが口から離れてしまいます。

琴ちゃーん、、落ち着けば直ぐに出来るようになるからガンバって！　可愛いトリックです♪

Molly

Beautiful beautiful Molly moo, the best playmate for Koto past away on 21st June at 16:30pm.　Describing Molly, She kept cheers me and Koto up, gave us a lots of laughter and smile every Thursday for 1.5 years. She was the sweetest dog ever, She wag a tail with beautiful big smile to anybody she meets and shared her love, she made everyone happy and smile. She also had the best mum in the world!
She was the luckiest and happiest dog who lived with full of love. Purely full of Love...Thank you so much Molly moo moo. We loved you so much.

琴の親友で遊び友達の優しくて本当に可愛いMollyが6月21日4:30pmに亡くなりました。たったの３歳でした。原因は謎めいた事が多く今は酷い状況ですが、ママが出張中にトレーナーさんに預けていた際に起きた悲惨な事故でした。モリーは毎週木曜にウチへ来て琴と遊んでいましたが、本当に忙しかった建築の仕事を突然失い途方に暮れていた私も、彼女の優しい笑顔や愛おしさにどれだけ励まされた事か。１年半だったけど彼女と毎週一緒に過ごせて本当に良かった。モリーはいつも愛に溢れていて会う人みんなに大きくしっぽを振って挨拶に行く優しい犬でした。それに一人暮らしのママをしっかり支えて来た強いガードドッグでもありました。ママもそんな彼女を本当の娘のように可愛がっていて世界で一番ラッキーでハッピーだった子。モリーちゃん！本当に本当に有り難うね。

Feral Koto @ 8th Herding

8th Herding Lesson...  We had no control and leadership with Koto.  We wasn't there for 3 weeks but it was not only she hasn't been to sheep herding for awhile.  She was trying to dominant the space and doing everything that she wants to do. She was constantly barking hard at the sheep and running full speed most of the time. I felt that we just let her to enjoy the "chasing".

We've learn very important lessons from Dave showing Koto how to slow down and focus on him.

When he did a demonstration with koto, She was still challenging and trying hard to dominate the space, but was not too bad herding... well its all up to us to control the space and make her to work for us! 

1) Consistency in command voice tone:  

"No" to correct behavior is ok to be strong or soft tone but commands like "Sit" "Stop" should be always the same voice tone. Clear NO and Clear Commands that is always the same.

2) Release command after "Sit/Stop" with hand signal:

 Koto has been releasing herself on her own as soon as she saw Dean putting his rised hands signal down.  

He has to put his hand down then release her to not let her release on her own.

3) Leash control and focus:  

Start with leash communication to show leadership in the space.  Make the dog focus on you.

Picture below are from the valley back of the herding school. After the lesson, We went to walk and It was just beautiful to walk around! We release all our stress and enjoyed running around green valley!

８回目のハーディングは完全にノックアウト。Feral とは全く訓練されていない野良犬、野性化したとか野蛮でどうしょうも無いという意味ですが、先生にFeral Kotoと呼ばれてしまいましたよ！ 羊に歯向かい吠えながらフルスピードで走る、コマンドは無視、もしくはいやいやゆっくり座ったり止まったりするけど自分勝手にコマンド解除！完全に”追掛ける”を楽しませただけでした。　見かねたDave先生が琴とデモレッスンをやってくれました。先生に付きっきりでもう一度細かく指導して頂いて大切な点を習ってきました。

1)　コマンドの声のトーンはいつも同じで。

2)　コマンド解除する際のハンドシグナルに注意。

3)　リードを放す前に集中力を高める為にアイコンタクトをとったりリードでのコミュニケーションでリーダーシップをとる事。

課題の大きな１週間になりそうです。公園に行ってボールやフリスビーを投げる前に練習します。 

下の写真は学校の近くにある谷。一気にこのレッスンでストレスの溜まったパートナーと一緒に気分を落ち着かせる為にレッスンの後散歩を行きました！琴も私達も一緒に走り回って気分爽快。本当に奇麗な散歩道でした

Afternoon at Castlemain

キャッスルメインのアンティークショップは巨大倉庫がアンティークで埋め尽くされていました。古いもの、リサイクルは大好きなのでウキウキでしたが琴を車に残したままだったので　店内は１０分程しか見れませんでした。またいつか行こうっと♪それから街のあちこちで見かけたこのLost Dogのポスター。白黒ボーダーのMaudieちゃんが居なくなったそうです。多分パソコンなど持ってない人なんでしょうね,丁寧な手書きのMaudieの絵が全てのポスターに描かれていました。コの子が１日も早く優しい飼い主の元へ戻れますように！
Pictures are from Antique shop in Castlemaine, huge former wearhouse was covered in full of antiques!  I love recycling and treasure hunting but we had no time to spend much time.  well, some another time if we drop by..
the last picture is lost dog poster I saw everywhere in this town.  Poor little Maudie and owner. Owner must be missing her very much.  beautiful picture of her and hopefully they will see each other soon.

Mt.Franklin bushwalk

先週末は3連休だったので近場ですがMt.Franklin へハイキングへ出かけてきました。今期最後にもう一度行きたかったキャンプは少し寒かったのと気分がのらなかったので断念。Mt.フランクリンは松林があり深緑のなかでハイキングが楽しめましたよ。眺めもよかったし楽しいハイキングでした！帰りにキャッスルメインに因ってお茶もしましたが、７年ぶりに訪れたこの小さな街、とても可愛いお店が沢山ありました。 サッカー日本が勝ったし、料理も沢山して美味しいものを食べて　良い気分転換になった週末でした：）We had a long weekend, and this was the last long weekend for next 4.5 month!! Definitely wented to hike somewhere for this weekend so we did short bush walk at Mt. Franklin on Saturday.  Pine tree forest is not common in OZ and make me feels like being Japan!  Great valley view with soft pine leaves ground for walking. On the way back we stoped by Castlemaine for little snack and coffee and found huge antique shop.  Cute country town and lovely shop. And japan finally won to soccer game, we cook great food every meal. It was great to refresh our mind from last week sadness.

Sad morning without sweetie

6月9日5:30pm,マンキーちゃんが肺ガンの為、虹の橋を渡りました。私達と暮らし始めて４年,まだ８歳でした。

先週の行方不明事件は近所の猫とのテリトリー争いが原因で帰ってこなかったのではなく肺に水が溜まり呼吸困難の為 家へ戻る階段さえも登ってこられなかったか、もしくは一人で静かな時間を過ごしたかったのだとやっと解りました。４月にビッコを引き出したと同時に進行した衰弱食欲不良だったので、足の原因ばかり突き止めてきましたが　この頃からずっと苦しかったのだと思います。血液検査や体内の検査ももちろんしたのですが肺の急激な異変はこの1ヶ月の事だったようです。

遺体は家に連れて帰って琴と一緒にお別れをした後、いつもマンキーが過ごしていた庭に埋めました。 

琴は動かないマンキーに寄り添って匂いをかぎ、キュンキュンいいながら一生懸命起こそうとしましたが、泣いている私たちを見て、何か理解した様に、そっと私達のそばに付いて一緒に見守ってくれました。とにかく　小さな身体で本当にここまでよく頑張ったね。　優しくておっとりで甘えん坊さんで、本当に可愛くて可愛くていつもいとおしいかった。 今まで本当にありがとう。

9th June, 2010, Monkey passed away suffered from a Lung Cancer.  She was only 8 years old,  lived with us for 4 years.  We assuming that she had long struggle with breathing problem for over a month. When she was gone missing for 5 days last week, she wanted to be either alone in peace or couldn't come upstairs from pain.  We did blood, nutrition, kidney and liver testing but couldn't find lung fail last month because of she started limping hind leg at the same time so we all considered its coming from her joint pain. We finally realized that she was having a hard time to breath for 2 month.  Her tiny lung was filled in water.  Poor little monkey.. you did extremely well and had the greatest patient with all those pain.   We took Monkey's body home last night 3 of us said good-bye together.  Surely I felt that we were strongly bonded family and little Monkey teach me so many important things in life.   Koto understood Monkey was not moving and we were very sad about it, then she sit next to us calmly.

Monkey chan, You were the sweetest, cutest, funniest and the most loveliest cat I have ever seen and we love you very much.  Thank you for being our sweetie and gave us a joyful time.

Also thank you for our friends, who gave her a pad with love and looked after her when we were away.
