Sheep herding 3rd lesson -Confident building-

We were at 3rd sheep herding lesson last Saturday, and I was also at agility trial on Sunday... 
To be honest, that was very bad choice, doing both herding and agility in one weekend! Because... I totally didn't know there were sheep... 
oh so many many sheep RIGHT next to agility ring on Sunday !! 

Yeah, Niah was so excited about sheep at agility- and didn't connect with me at agility... Weather was terrible, bad ground condition, not that exciting courses, 
It wasn't great day at all on Sunday....
so we didn't have luck for agility as you can imagine! 

But how was herding?  
Hm... it was... very interesting.  
A lot of new behavior to learn. 
I've seen many of "Never seen my dogs do that" moment!!

We were back to the paddock where we had a first lesson at Instructor's house. 
Niah was doing alright.. but still broke troop a couple of times and just chasing around them.. then we notice that he only goes to back side of the sheep, and we finally realized that..
"Oh, He is a bit scared of sheep!!!"
Yes, Koto and Niah both never looks at Sheep's eyes. 

SO--- what we did was...
Confident building exercise.   
We put about 5 sheep in the pen, and we put dogs ON TOP OF sheep to get use to them. Also let Niah and Koto to look at Sheep's eyes, really deeply... 
For instance, If sheep are stuck in the corner, dogs needs to somehow find a way to push them, to do so, sheep dogs needs to crawl under the small gap and push back from where they are, and apparently that's one of the important sheepdog mission. 
Being stronger than sheep, being confident with Sheep.. 
 
Unfortunately, I didn't record what we did.. because both Koto & Niah were screaming.. 
So- No video or photo, but here is what I've seen (Not exactly! haha..)  

Koto and Niah had some moment that wagging their tail on top of sheep, getting very relaxed with them, it was just too funny.. and as soon as they move, back to super serious. They both started to show teeth to them. wow, my sweet boy is showing a teeth!!
Niah got confident with sheep quickly,    Koto is bit more timid (as always she is). 
A lot more things to work on, but they both show significant confident improvement this day.  What a exciting day for us.

英語で沢山書いたので、日本語は短めに書きますが、先週末は土曜がハーディング、そして日曜はアジリティの競技会と忙しかったのです。。。
でもこの組み合わせ、、大失敗でしたぁぁ〜
なぜかというと、、なんとアジの競技会は1時間半はなれた”ど”田舎だったのですが、　
なんと、、、アジのリングのすぐ隣に羊が、、、、、30頭くらいいたかなぁ。。
土曜のハーディングがかなりフルオンだったので、ニアは羊ばっかり気にして集中力ゼロ、 コネクションゼロ、、そして天気最悪、グランドコンディションは悪し、
コースもなんだか超難しかったり、超簡単だったり、、、なんだか、、、全てがぁ
微妙。。さんざんなアジリティでした。

そして土曜のハーディングはどうだったかというと、これがかなーり　興味深い一日でした。
ニアや琴は　羊を追掛けたりまとめる事はわかってるのですが、ただ後ろをうろうろするだけで、羊の目を一切見ない様に　目をそらしながら後ろから近づいているんじゃない？
ってインストラクターが言い出したのです。
私が羊に近づかれるとすこし、ドキドキ、おどおどしてしまう様に、（大きいしあの目がちょっと恐い）二匹とも羊がちょっと恐いみたい（笑）
そんなわけで、、コンフィデントビルディングエクササイズ！っていうのをやったのですが、これが、羊の上に犬をのせたり、羊に思いっきり顔を近づけてにらめっこさせたり、ペンの端っこに固まった羊の足下にむりやり隙間をみつけて入らせ、端っこから羊を動かすというエクササイズでした。
これはよくケルピーがよくステーションでやってるの見ますが、
シープドッグがまた子犬の時に羊に慣れさせる為に昔やっていたエクササイズだそうです。
でも実は　今はRSPCA(動物保護団体)がやってはいけない（羊が傷つく事があるため）という条例をつくっているらしく禁止されています。。　そして、、、案の定　1匹の羊がパニックになりペンに激突！
可哀想に鼻血だしてました。。。。ごめんよーメーメ。
でも　やっちゃいけないんだよ、といわれながらも　お勧めされた訳がよーく解りました。
ニアは羊の目の前にきたら思いっきりそっぽ向いて目をそらしていたのですが、
羊の上で羊に馴れさせたり、色んな事をやってるうち、みるみる自信がついてきて、あっという間に羊をにらむようになりました（笑）
琴はというと、、後ろから羊に噛み付いて行くくせに、同じく　ちょっと恐い。。
ハーディングも奥深いですね。トレーニングする事が沢山です！
今回は2匹が大興奮状態で写真が全然とれなかったので　合成写真をお楽しみあれ（笑）

そんなわけで、こんなエクササイズをした翌日に　羊が隣にいるリングでアジリティが出来る訳なーい！

2nd Sheep herding lesson

We are finally back in Sheep herding lesson! Koto is still not perfect, so this day was only Niah.
It was only 2nd try with this herding club, but we practice with small mob of about 60 ewes.  wow, that was incredibly exciting experience to see my boy's natural instinct.
He was really good. Instructors are both really happy for what he /dean did this day. 
We started with just letting him to chase the mob, work out how to move them. 
then also taught him to work for us, listen to our command, to create team work.

He can be very aggressive, but also calm and steady.  We manage to teach quite many commands and he started to understand to "work together" not just chasing around the mob. 
The end of the day, we tried "Away to me", and it went really well. 
He was a bit naughty, breaking the mob in the end but he put them together nicely and bring them back in the end. 
So far, it looks like he is quickly learning the concept. 
 There are so much more to teach and learn together, but looks like Niah has a bright potential. 
 
今週末のメルボルンは4連休です。昔からの皇室の競馬観戦の日で　国民の皆さんもメルボルンカップという競馬をクイーンが観戦の為に着た様な服や帽子にドレスアップしてを見に行きます。　私は全く知らないけど、今年は　日本の馬が優勝するかも！という噂を耳にします。何はともあれ頑張って下さい〜

ところで、そんなにぎやかな週末、私達は田舎で2回目のシープハーディングのレッスンをしてきました。琴の足のせいで行けなかったのですが、待っても待ってもなかなか完治しないので、今回はニアだけで　初の”群れ追い”に挑戦！
初めて60頭程の群れを追わせたのですがやっぱり天性ですね、ちゃんと羊を集めてきます。 でもチームワークやコマンドはこの興奮状態の中で少しずつ教えて行かなければいけません。公園でずっと練習してきたComebyとAway、それにLaydownは随分理解して来ている様子。Lay　downは ただ、タイミングが遅過ぎるので　これはもっと練習しなければです。
そして今回初めてニアがボーダーコリーの”目”を使ってストーキングをしているのを見た気がします！最後のAway to me（遠距離にいる羊を連れてくる事）も大成功。まだまだ動きやコマンド、練習する事が沢山ありますが、ニアは将来良いシープドッグになりそう♥
来年のトライアル出場目指してがんばります。

Sheep herding 1st lesson at Driving force working dog club!

 
We are finally back in sheep herding last weekend!
It has been 2.5 years since we stopped herding lesson.
This time, we are attending to another working sheep club for
2 reasons：

• Koto's confident building:  Work on her reactive behavior to dogs and animals, We want to build her confidence and connection to us. 

• Perhaps, start sheep herding trail with Niah next year.  This herding club has own trial using ISDS trail form, which is very exciting.  Always good to have something to work for and achievement.

Our new school was excellent, environment, teaching method and instructors are all great.  Instruction fee was very cheap for this environment too. We will be working on both in small pan to teach basic commands and learn what handler will do! 
Then, also take them to paddock, so that dog will learn how to bring sheep back to us. 
We did trail assessment day, both Koto and Niah had a 4 go in the pan and paddock. 
We are happy with what they have done, Specially Niah has good instinct of herding sheep in calmly.  Koto is more likely for moving a large mob of stock. 
Hope her barking and running will be less and she will figure out what to do, and not to waste her energy too much. But most important things for her is "life lesson" through sheep herding.  She is not really suitable for sheep herding... but we believe her timid, reactive, and anti-social behavior will improve!

2年半ぶりにハーディングへ行ってきました。ずっと前から行ってみたかった学校のトライアルレッスンへ参加したのですが、凄ーく良い学校で驚きました。環境、先生のインストラクション、それにカリキュラムが素晴らしい。ペンの中での練習だけでは犬は右回り、左回りマテやステディなどのコマンドくらいしか学ばないのでフィールドでのレッスンと平行して行います。
そして何と言っても犬は本能で動けるのですが、その本能を操る為の”ハンドラーのレッスン”をまずしっかり行ないます。羊の性格や動き方、ファーマーにとっては基本的な事なのかもしれませんが、都会でペットのボーダーと暮らす私達には解ないのです。　
犬なしで3頭の羊をどうやって動かすのか？　100頭の羊はどうやって動かすのか？ 
そんなレッスンから始めいきます。
来年はこのクラブ主催のハーディングトライアルも行なわれる予定なのでそれに向けて
これから月に2回ペースでレッスンして行く予定です。
 
今回のハーディングのレッスンへ戻って来た目的は二つ。

• 琴に自信をつけさせて、犬へのアグレッション、動物へのリアクションを 減らす事。マナーを学ばせる、それから私達とのもっと深いコネクションを築く事。
• ニアとトライアルをやってみる事。　

とってもジェントルマンなニア君は静かに羊を動かせます。それに最近の公園での行動をみていると、遠距離の羊を動かせるのではないかと思い、やってみる事にしました。
反対に良く吠える、スピードをつけてどんどん追いかける琴は100頭とか大きな群れの牛 や羊を動かす力を持っています。でも　正直、羊追い向きの犬ではありません。
無駄にエネルギーを消耗している、まだ一体なにをしていいのか解っていない。。
とにかく琴はハーディングよりもマナーを学ばせる事と自信を付ける事が一番大切なのです。　ゆっくりやっていきます！

こんな調子でずっと遠距離から全速力で 私達を見守っています。
もちろん、琴が止まればニアも遠くで止まってクラウチング。。
もしくは木の陰に隠れたり、、
でも一人で勝手にエクササイズしてくれるのでこっちとしては
とーっても　楽なのです：）

Sunday was Niah's 4th Herding lesson.  Oh- He is very calm/gentle and excellent in movement.  we still work on stop/steady in command, but going right (over) and left(back) are getting very well!  He is observing our commands and sheep movement very well!  Naturally born to herd! (gently ;)

Koto.. She was good in the small pan, but she lost control in the big pan!  Koto the Hurricane is back! so then I can not take her pictures well...(too fast miss!) 

日曜にニアの4回目のハーディングレッスンに行ってきました。ニア、どんどん良くなってます！いい体勢、距離、動きの早さも凄くいいし、しっかり私達のコマンドと羊の動きをしっかりみてる。9ヶ月なのに生まれながらの天性って凄いなぁ〜　まだ幼さがあるけどカッコよくなってきたなぁ。私はこれからニアのハンドリングをするので今日はニアと一緒にレッスンしてきましたが、ニアとはかなり楽しかったです（琴は難しい。。）琴は小さいパンでのレッスンは良かったのですが、大きい方に行ったら完全にロスとコントロール。。ハリケーン化したので中断しました（笑）動きが本当に早くていつものように写真全然撮れないし。。これも天性！いいコンビの姉弟です

Niah is steady, Koto run as fast as possible, Koto is a little too crazy about chasing sheep but they are both thinking deeply. 

Koto never walk or calm when she is engaging with us, so I suppose she is just born to run!　No matter if she is not suitable for herding, we are happy that she is having a fun and controlling herself in this extremely exciting situation.

The most of the commands worked well and we were happy about both completely different dogs. It is balanced!

ニアと琴の先日のハーディングビデオです。ニアは本当にオビもハーディングも信頼出来ます。

とにかくコマンドが一気に入るし、何と言ってもこの落ち着きっぷり、ステディさは天性ですね。kotoは完全に羊を追い回していますがこれが彼女の天性で、走る為に産まれて来たような子。。ハーディングには向いてないかもですが、この興奮状態でセルフコントロールをしているし、楽しそうな姿を見るのは私達も嬉しい！

 2匹はまったく違う動きをするのですが、真剣に羊を追う事を考えている様だし、コマンドもしっかり効いてるし、一時期野良犬化して完全コマンドムシをしていた琴に比べると　今回は少し前進したように思いました♪

Koto and Niah had a great day at agility and herding lesson.

Niah was only 14 weeks old when we did 1st herding lesson, so we thought he will be more enthusiastic and run faster or bark at sheep but he was still very calm and steady towards to sheep as before and kept great distance with them! 

Koto still runs very fast and bark as usual but she was listening to Dean's command straight away and worked for him this timel!  

It was great result for both of them and we were very happy!Niah finally met his half brother Rum (Cree x Chip) at herding lesson. Rum has shiny and smooth coat, and pretty small body.  Niah was already a little taller than him! He is 3 month older than Niah.

Herding was a little too busy so we left early and went to Mt. Macedon for hiking on the way back!  It was great day!

琴ニアをつれてアジの練習のコートを1時間借りてコンタクトとニアのトンネルとターンの練習をしてきました♪　楽しかった！

その後向かいにあるハーディングレッスンにも寄って行きました。久しぶりのレッスンだったし、前回はニアがまだ生後14週のパピーだったので今回は少し気合いを入れて行ったのですが、ニアは今回もしっかり羊との一定の距離を守ってディーンのコマンドをしっかり聞いてました！　素晴らしい〜！琴も相変わらず吠えるし、走りすぎるのですが、アジリティの練習の成果なのでしょうか、コマンドの効きが素早くてセルフコントロールしてました！

良い動きをしてくれたので本当に嬉しくなりました！ニアのハーフブラザーのRUMにも合えました！ラムはCree x Chipの子供で、ニアよりもの3ヶ月お兄ちゃん。ニアとは違って毛並みがツヤツヤで身体も小さくかなり可愛い！ニアは既にラムよりも背が高かったです。
イースターの為かなり込み合っていたので早めに切り上げてハイキングまでしてきました！充実した一日でした

Niah 1st Herding! (1st time to meet sheep)

今年最後のハーディングレッスンに行ってきました！本当に久しぶりだったのですが、かなり楽しかった〜。
琴は久しぶりだったので　初めはかなりの興奮状態で走る走る。。おかげで全然琴の写真とれませんでした。
またもや大変でしたが２度目は少し落ち着いてコマンドも利き始めました。ハーディングが終わった後の琴のものすごーく幸せそうな顔をみてもっと頻繁に来ないとなぁ、、と反省。アジもいいけど　まだまだアジの楽しさを知らない私達なのでハーディングも平行してやって行きます。
ちなみにニア君もハーディングデビューしてきました。それに社会科には最高な場所！犬好きな人と犬が沢山！！ワーキングドッグとパピーと遊べて楽しかったみたい。それにしても天性ですね〜　ちゃんと羊の追い込み方知っていました。
落ち着いているししっかりディーンの動きを読んでいました。早めに始めたほうがいいという意味もようやく　わかりました！（意見は人それぞれですが）途中落ちてる羊のウンチをスナック代わりに食べるので（笑）集中力にかけてましたが。。まぁまだまだ３ヶ月のパピーですね♫　


そして　今回沢山のかっこいいクーリーに会いましたよ！ピンクの首輪、垂れ耳トライマールのエラちゃん、と１５歳のブルーアイの子（名前忘）、レスキューされたジャスパー、今では教育熱心なオーナーに引き取られて本当に健康で幸せそう！
本当に可愛いです。エラちゃんはあまりの可愛さにうっとりほれぼれ〜！動きも体格も性格も最高！
そして写真はハーディングをするロットワイラー！昔はケトルドック（牛追い）としてロットを使っていたらしいです。意外とジェントル、すばらしく服従したロットで飼い主も凄腕のハーディング経験者でいいもの見てきました♫　


We finally made to herding class before the end of the year!! yay! It has been so long since Koto herd sheep so she was full on-high-energy.. (well as usual is good description)Thats why I couldn't take her picture at all... but 2nd run was a little better.  
She started to listen to commands and a little calmer.  We needed to come here more often.  I really felt that after saw Koto's Happy face expression after herding sheep!!   Niah did try too! He was very good and knew how to move sheep already!
He also enjoyed having a little poop as a snacks during herding!  it was so funny and yukky!!!

There were beautiful dogs and people! we enjoyed our self so much, and ofcause koto.. She was a bit  too excited at first, then injured her paws as always.. She is back in rest at home..  Niah join Blue-Merle-coolie club!  Coolies are excellent dogs.  

I was in love with this Tri-Coolie girl called "Ella" (pink caller, she is 1.5 yo, from Ararat farm)

I have never seen floppy ear Coolie! and she was just beautiful!  Blue-merle with blue eyes is 15 years old! she was absolutely beautiful too! 

The last one is Jasper!  He is stunning coolie and very lucky boy rescued by excellent owner.

10th Herding and little agility fun

wow!  We've done 10 herding lessons already!  Did we improved??  Hmm..Koto still run into sheep, barks at them, still challenging dean if she can take over total control out of him and delay to his commands. She is not bad though, but not good. Not really improving as much as other working dogs. I did record on video but it was pretty chaotic herding (no.. chasing!)

We have been trying to understand and studying more sheep herding by internet,  books and videos. I found BC breeder and sheepdog trainer in England called "Astra Sheepdog centre" they provide seminar of "Natural Canine Communication."  Essential skill for the beginner handler as it ensures a quick understanding of the complex and almost invisible communication between the dog and sheep. 

it is easy, stress and pain free way for both dog, handler and sheep to train a sheepdog to understand each other, and learn its craft in a natural stress and panic free way.  

I am absolutely interested in this seminar. well it is too far to attend so I am still researching about this. I really want to Koto to be thinking dog and don't want her to feel anxious and worried about making mistakes. Her confidence and focus is getting stronger than before since we started "complete correction free" life. 

The excesice we will start with Koto this week: using long stick and soccer ball to teach over, away, quick response to command and self control around excitable object! 

ハーディングレッスンは今回で10回目でした。10回やってみて何か目に見えた変化があったのでしょうか？もちろん私生活や私達との関係には変化が見られます。でもパートナーと話し合ってもやはり琴ちゃんの羊を追う体勢や行動はあまり変わっていない様子。まだ全速力で走るし吠えるし冷静に判断できない、お 陰で私達も真剣に本や映像でハーディングの勉強中。イギリスのアストラシープドッグセンターというBCブリーダー、羊犬トレーナーのセミナーでナチュラル ケーナインコミュニケーションというセミナーのを見つけました。羊犬人間の自然な行動学を理解し、お互いに慣れ、ストレスやパニックの無い関係を築く練習 をする様です。興味しんしん！琴は感受性の高い子なのでいかにマイルドなコレクション（ショックカラーもNG）も「間違えたら怒られるぅ」という感じで臆病になります。コレクションフリー(Noやeh ehもNG）の生活に変えてから　めまぐるしく彼 女の自信とやる気がパワーアップした事と、彼女の集中力の強さに毎日驚かされます。琴にはとても良さそうな内容なので、リサーチしてもっと勉強します
 

We did agility practice at Kepala too. 

we did 2x2 pole entry practice, contact practice and just made her to feel agility is fun!  Well.. the end of the day She's got 3 breeding pads. Poor koto, She is totally in a pain and  is in bed all day.  Terrible terrible mum..hope she will learn to not to run too quickly.

ハーディングスクールの向いにアジリティレンタルコートがあります。１時間5ドルなので2x2、コ ンタクトの練習をしてきました。でも！ー琴のパットがぱっくりはがれてました。２週間続けて３本も。今日は全くベットから動きません,珍しく酷い疲れ方。遊びすぎた。。

9th Herding

先週の琴のハーディングは元に戻りました！まだ羊に向って吠えてはいましたが、しっかりシェパードのディーンの指示に従い（少しタイミングが遅いけど）彼がこの環境の主導権を しっかり握っていました！今回は随分頭を使って羊の動かし方を考えているように見えました：）どんどん　こうやって冷静に物事を判断できる子になってほしいもんです。。そして私達の大きな変化は今回から一切コレクションなし。音でのコレクションはまだ使わないといけない時がありますが、絶対に”ノー”といったり怒ったりは無しです。ハーディングでも出来たら褒める、やって欲しい事を教えるのPositive Reinforcementだけでレッスンしていきます！写真は琴の双子では？と言われているsassyちゃん、琴の隣で羊を覗くのがAbbyちゃん、左の写真がSouthAustraliaのNorm FarmクーリーのRasta。下がBCのsasha!　可愛い子ばかりで私の方がウキウキでした。

Koto was pretty good at last herding, was not show feral(?) behavior at all this time! She was much better and let Dean to control space. She was thinking much more than just rounding up.  The big change for us is we decided to never use correction(strong NO or Yelling) to Koto at Herding lesson.  We will be consist in positive reinforcement, might have to use sound to correct her but never ever say NO! I finally got a picture of beautiful BC Sassy(Agility instructor's dog),Abby next to Koto. They both looks like Koto so much! We met other new beautiful new dog Rasta the Coolie (Norm's Coolie's puppy) on left side picture and below is BC girl Sasha.  many cute & great dogs!

Feral Koto @ 8th Herding

8th Herding Lesson...  We had no control and leadership with Koto.  We wasn't there for 3 weeks but it was not only she hasn't been to sheep herding for awhile.  She was trying to dominant the space and doing everything that she wants to do. She was constantly barking hard at the sheep and running full speed most of the time. I felt that we just let her to enjoy the "chasing".

We've learn very important lessons from Dave showing Koto how to slow down and focus on him.

When he did a demonstration with koto, She was still challenging and trying hard to dominate the space, but was not too bad herding... well its all up to us to control the space and make her to work for us! 

1) Consistency in command voice tone:  

"No" to correct behavior is ok to be strong or soft tone but commands like "Sit" "Stop" should be always the same voice tone. Clear NO and Clear Commands that is always the same.

2) Release command after "Sit/Stop" with hand signal:

 Koto has been releasing herself on her own as soon as she saw Dean putting his rised hands signal down.  

He has to put his hand down then release her to not let her release on her own.

3) Leash control and focus:  

Start with leash communication to show leadership in the space.  Make the dog focus on you.

Picture below are from the valley back of the herding school. After the lesson, We went to walk and It was just beautiful to walk around! We release all our stress and enjoyed running around green valley!

８回目のハーディングは完全にノックアウト。Feral とは全く訓練されていない野良犬、野性化したとか野蛮でどうしょうも無いという意味ですが、先生にFeral Kotoと呼ばれてしまいましたよ！ 羊に歯向かい吠えながらフルスピードで走る、コマンドは無視、もしくはいやいやゆっくり座ったり止まったりするけど自分勝手にコマンド解除！完全に”追掛ける”を楽しませただけでした。　見かねたDave先生が琴とデモレッスンをやってくれました。先生に付きっきりでもう一度細かく指導して頂いて大切な点を習ってきました。

1)　コマンドの声のトーンはいつも同じで。

2)　コマンド解除する際のハンドシグナルに注意。

3)　リードを放す前に集中力を高める為にアイコンタクトをとったりリードでのコミュニケーションでリーダーシップをとる事。

課題の大きな１週間になりそうです。公園に行ってボールやフリスビーを投げる前に練習します。 

下の写真は学校の近くにある谷。一気にこのレッスンでストレスの溜まったパートナーと一緒に気分を落ち着かせる為にレッスンの後散歩を行きました！琴も私達も一緒に走り回って気分爽快。本当に奇麗な散歩道でした
